A Ryobi Level Laser, a Ryobi 10 Inch Drill Press, and the Chromebook Printer Problem That Taught Me Total Cost

Last January, I walked into our maintenance closet and found the new facility tech trying to level a shelf with a folded notebook. I laughed, then ordered a Ryobi level laser cube that afternoon. That small purchase set off a chain reaction: a Ryobi 10 inch drill press, a 3D printer debate, and the most painful two hours of my office-manager month when I tried to add a printer to a Chromebook.

I've run purchasing for a 300-person company since 2020. I report to operations and finance. In a normal year I process 60 to 80 orders across about eight vendors. I'm not a tool expert. I'm the person who has to live with the choices afterward.

How a Laser Level Exposed the Problem

We didn't have a formal process for buying tools at the time. We had verbal requests and a spreadsheet that nobody updated. I ordered the Ryobi level laser because it made sense to the person doing the work. It was not the cheapest level on the shelf. But the self-leveling feature meant he could set it once and trust the line while he marked the other end of the wall. That single feature saved more time on that first job than the extra cost of the cube.

I didn't know it yet, but that little purchase was about to show me why 'cheapest' is such a dangerous default.

The Ryobi 10 Inch Drill Press Decision

Two weeks later, he asked for a drill press. I started by searching 'Ryobi 10 inch drill press' and comparing it with a no-name import. The Ryobi was more expensive. The base felt solid. The table didn't wobble. The chuck opened smoothly. The import did not.

I don't have hard data on failure rates, but based on our equipment history, my sense is that cheap tools die twice as fast, and the downtime costs more than the tool. Did I feel good about saving $90? Sure. But was I going to trust that press to drill a row of holes in a steel bracket? Not a chance.

People think a higher price means a vendor is padding the margin. Actually, a higher price often just means the vendor built the part that doesn't break first. What most people don't realize is that the cheapest option usually requires an extra trip, an extra tool, or an extra hour of setup. Time is not free.

A Quick 3D Printer Detour

While that was being sorted, one of the engineers dropped a request on my desk. 'We need a 3D printer,' he said. I searched 'things you can make with a 3d printer' and got plastic dragons and phone cases. Not helpful. Then he showed me the boring stuff: custom cable clips, alignment blocks, a replacement knob for a machine the OEM no longer makes. That got my attention.

We still haven't bought one, because the first quote didn't include operator training or the fact that a failed print starts with wasted filament. But I stopped dismissing the idea. The total-cost lens works both ways.

The Chromebook Printer Problem

The real meltdown came from a Chromebook. An employee said, 'I can't print from my work Chromebook.' I assumed it was a network problem. It wasn't. I typed 'add printer to chromebook' into the search bar and found the steps quickly. None of them worked because the printer wasn't compatible.

I knew I should have checked compatibility before we bought that printer. But it had been in the office for years, and I thought 'any Wi-Fi printer works.' This was the one time it mattered. The print job would queue and quietly disappear. The Chromebook didn't even see the printer on the network.

According to Google's ChromeOS help documentation (support.google.com, accessed January 2025), Chromebooks print through the built-in Print app, and the most reliable setup uses a Mopria-certified printer. Ours wasn't. That's the answer I should have looked up before I started blaming the network.

The Difference Between a Laser and Inkjet Printer

The printer had to be replaced. That forced me to learn the difference between a laser and inkjet printer in the only way that counts: cost per page and reliability for our office.

Laser printers use toner and heat to fuse powder to paper. Inkjet printers spray liquid ink. For an office that prints contracts, labels, and NCR forms, a laser is usually the right call. Toner doesn't dry out. You can leave it for a month without using it. It handles text cleanly, and the per-page cost is lower. Inkjet is better for photos and heavy color, but the inkjets we've had in this office all clogged if they sat unused.

Based on the cartridges we actually buy, our mono laser prints at about 2.5 cents per page, while the old inkjet was closer to 11 cents per page once I counted wasted cartridges. I wish I'd tracked that from the start. What I can say anecdotally is that the ink drying out cost us more than any replacement toner.

The replacement printer wasn't the cheapest one. It was a small mono laser with the lowest total cost per page. In the four months since, it hasn't missed a single job. The Ryobi level laser and the Ryobi 10 inch drill press work the same way: cost a little more upfront, save a lot in use.

What I'd Tell My Past Self

If I could go back, I'd do three things differently. First, ask what it really costs to run before asking what it costs to buy. Second, check compatibility with our actual devices before ordering anything. Third, create an equipment request form after the first bad purchase, not after the third. The third time is when I finally did it.

The bottom line? Price is what you pay. Value is what keeps your team working. That applies to a Ryobi level laser, a Ryobi 10 inch drill press, a printer, or a 3D printer. Provided you can actually connect it and use it when it arrives.
