Ryobi Tools, Laser Levels, and Printer Issues: An Office Buyer's Equipment FAQ

I'm the office administrator for a mid-sized manufacturing company—about 150 employees across two locations. I handle most of the purchasing for our maintenance team, office staff, and facilities group. Roughly $95,000 a year across 9 vendors.

These six questions come up more than anything else. Some surprised me when I first took over purchasing in 2020. A few have answers that changed over the last five years, which is part of why I wanted to write them down.

1. Is Ryobi Actually Good for Professional Use?

Our maintenance staff asks this, and so do the smaller contractors who rent space in our facility. The short answer is yes, with a caveat.

Ryobi built its name on homeowner tools, and that reputation has been slow to fade. But the 18V ONE+ system changed the conversation. When I compared battery platforms across four major brands in 2020, Ryobi's brushless tools were competitive on specs and significantly easier on the budget—especially once you factor in replacement batteries. According to Ryobi's site (ryobi.com), the ONE+ system includes more than 280 tools that share the same battery platform. From a procurement standpoint, that means you're not buying a new battery and charger for every single tool.

What I mean is: the tools hold up fine for day-to-day maintenance work, but the real savings come from the ecosystem. Our team standardized on ONE+ back in 2021, and we've added five tools since without spending a cent on additional batteries.

I'm not a tradesperson, so I can't speak to how a Ryobi drill handles eight hours of daily heavy construction. What I can tell you from a buyer's perspective is that our maintenance crew hasn't had a single failure in three years, and the cost difference meant we could stock two tools in the budget where we used to afford one.

2. Which Ryobi Laser Level Should We Buy?

"Laser level" covers a lot of ground. Ryobi makes cross-line lasers, point lasers, 360-degree units, and the small self-leveling cube that our guys reach for most. If I remember correctly, the two best-sellers are the Ryobi laser level cube and the multi-surface laser level. Model numbers change yearly, so I won't quote specifics.

What actually matters when you're buying one for facility work rather than job-site construction:

  • Self-leveling vs. manual. Self-leveling costs more but saves time on every single setup. Worth it if more than one person on your team will use it.
  • Line visibility. A 360-degree line is excellent for open spaces and layout work. Cross-line is enough for small rooms, shelving, and equipment alignment.
  • Magnetic mounting. Small feature, huge convenience around metal racks, door frames, and machinery.

Ten years ago, you'd pay a premium for reliable accuracy. That's not the case anymore—the tech got cheaper, and entry-level units are more than adequate for typical maintenance tasks. The fundamentals of leveling haven't changed, but the execution has.

3. Where Do I Find Ryobi Drill Press Parts?

This is one of the first things I search for when a tool gets dropped and it's out of warranty. Ryobi drill press parts—replacement key chucks, belts, depth stops—are available from a few reliable places:

  1. Ryobi's official parts page (ryobi.com, under Service & Support). Search by model number, ships direct. This is where I always start.
  2. Authorized distributors like Tool Parts Direct or eReplacementParts. These carry OEM parts and show exploded diagrams so you can confirm you're ordering the right piece.
  3. Marketplace sellers (Amazon, eBay). Fine for non-critical items. Proceed with caution.

We learned that last one the hard way. Saved $14 on a replacement belt from an unknown seller, and it snapped within two months. The official part plus downtime cost us roughly $60 more overall. Classic penny-wise, pound-foolish. Now I check for OEM markings before ordering anything, and I always photograph the model number plate first.

4. Does Laser Cleaning Machine Rental Make Sense vs. Buying?

This isn't a question I hear often, but it's one more businesses should ask. We looked into laser cleaning equipment for removing rust and paint from shop-floor equipment. The purchase price for a portable industrial unit was $25,000+ based on quotes we received in Q1 2025. For a handful of uses per year, that was impossible to justify.

Laser cleaning machine rental ended up being the practical middle ground. Pricing varies by region and machine capacity, but we found daily and weekly rates from specialty equipment rental companies and a couple of industrial supply houses nearby.

The landscape has shifted fast. A few years ago, laser cleaning was niche technology for aerospace and heritage restoration. Now handheld units are available for rent in most metro areas. The buy-vs-rent fundamentals haven't changed—it's about frequency and total cost—but the range of options is far better than it was in 2020. If you only need it a few times a year, rent. If you're doing daily rust or coating removal, buy or lease.

5. Windows Can't Connect to the Printer: What Do I Do?

The exact phrase I see in my inbox at least once a month: "Windows cannot connect to the printer." Ninety percent of the time, it's not a hardware failure. Here's my order of operations:

  1. Check the network connection. Wireless printers drop off Wi-Fi when they idle. Reconnect the printer to the same network as the computer.
  2. Restart the print spooler. Open Windows Services, find Print Spooler, restart it. This fixes more issues than any other single step.
  3. Remove and re-add the printer. Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners. Delete it, then add it back.
  4. Reinstall the driver. Download from the manufacturer's site—not a third-party driver site that tries to install junk along with it.

If those steps don't work, I hand it to our IT vendor. I'm not a networking specialist, and two hours of me digging through router settings won't beat a ten-minute look from someone who does this daily. What I can contribute as the buyer: when we purchase printers, I prioritize models with Ethernet or Wi-Fi Direct as a backup connection. That feature alone has saved us more hours than any other spec on the sheet.

6. Inkjet Printer vs. Regular Printer: Which Is Better?

First, let's clear up the terminology. When people say "regular printer," they almost always mean laser—it was the office default for decades, so the shorthand stuck. What they're really asking: should we switch to inkjet?

For a company that prints mostly text documents, a monochrome laser is still the better deal. Toner lasts significantly longer than ink, and the cost per page is lower. From quotes we collected at major office supply vendors in early 2025, entry-level laser toner runs roughly 2.5 to 4 cents per page. Inkjet cartridges typically run 8 to 15 cents per page for comparable volume. Prices shift, so verify current rates before budgeting.

That said, inkjet has genuinely improved. The old drawbacks—slower printing, clogged heads, noisy operation—are largely gone in newer pigment-based ink systems. If you need color on a budget, a modern inkjet can beat a color laser, which gets brutal on toner replacement costs.

The fundamentals haven't changed: focus on total cost of ownership, not the sticker price. But the old answer—"just get a laser, it's always cheaper"—isn't automatically right anymore. Run your own numbers.
