Shop Equipment FAQ: Ryobi DP103L Drill Press & 2300 Watt Generator, Prusa MK4, Canon Printer Setup, DTF vs DTG

I manage equipment purchasing and maintenance for a small sign, fabrication, and print shop. I have been doing it for about seven years, and I have made and documented three significant equipment mistakes—roughly $12,000 in wasted budget. The expensive part was never the price of a machine; it was the gap between unboxing it and turning it into useful work. This FAQ is the checklist version of those lessons.

1. Do I Need a Ryobi 2300 Watt Generator if My Shop Has Power?

Only if your work happens where there are no wall outlets. Mine does, so my Ryobi 2300 watt generator earns its keep. But the number on the box is not the whole story. Motors have a startup surge: a saw or compressor can draw two to three times its running watts for a split second when it starts.

In July 2023, during an install in an unfinished building, I ran my miter saw and then started a small compressor. The generator's overload tripped. The generator was fine; my schedule was not. Not ideal, but workable after we reset it and changed the order of operations. The lesson is simple: a portable generator in this class is for running one serious tool at a time, plus lights and low-draw items. If you need to run a saw, compressor, and dust collector at the same time, you need more capacity or a plan to stagger starts.

2. Is the Ryobi DP103L Drill Press Enough for a Small Shop?

For the work that actually happens in a small shop, yes. I have a DP103L on a bench in my shop. It drills steel brackets, aluminum stock, and wooden templates accurately when I set it up properly. It is a bench-top drill press, not a production machine, and I do not pretend otherwise. If your plan is drilling hundreds of holes per hour all day, buy something bigger.

Most problems I see with this drill press are operator errors, and I say that as someone who made them. I burned bits drilling metal at wood speeds. I skipped cutting fluid. I tried to hold a small piece by hand instead of clamping it. The piece caught and spun. That is how I learned the drill press is not a cordless drill with extra steps.

For a small shop doing fixtures, brackets, and repair work, the Ryobi DP103L drill press is enough. Pair it with good bits and a drill vise, and clamp everything that might spin. The machine can perform; the operator needs to set it up right.

3. Is the Prusa MK4 3D Printer Worth It for a Shop That Isn't a 3D-Printing Business?

Only if you buy it for actual jobs. I bought a Prusa MK4 3D printer in March 2024 because a client needed 12 identical alignment jigs. My earlier budget printer could do the job, but it would have been a full-time project to get all 12 consistent. The MK4 made them without me babysitting each print. The automatic first-layer calibration changes how the machine behaves: it measures the build surface and adjusts itself, which removes the guessing from the most common failure point.

For a shop that is not a 3D-printing business, the MK4 is worth it only if you have a list of things you will print. We use ours for jigs, templates, spacers, and replacement parts that are cheaper to make than to buy and wait for. As of January 2025, my answer is still the same. If you cannot list five real jobs you would print next month, a cheaper printer is not the answer; no printer is.

4. What's the Worst Canon Printer Setup Mistake?

The worst one I made was skipping a setup step that looked outdated. In November 2024, I replaced an old Canon and told my helper it was wireless and should just go online. The printer connected, Windows said it was ready, and every print job sat in the queue. The Canon setup software had asked for a temporary USB connection during initial setup. I skipped it because I expected a wireless printer to set itself up.

The fix was boring. Download the full driver package from Canon's official site, connect the printer to the computer with a USB cable, run the installer, and let the software configure the Wi-Fi. After that, remove the cable. The generic Windows driver may be fine for printing once the printer is reachable, but for Canon printer setup, the manufacturer's full package is the right tool. When the on-screen instructions ask for USB, plug it in.

5. DTF Printer vs DTG: Which One Should a Small Shop Choose?

Choose based on the garments you actually print, not on which technology is popular this year. DTG, direct-to-garment, prints water-based ink directly onto pretreated garments. It is excellent for cotton t-shirts and gives a soft print that people like. It requires pretreating and needs regular use; printheads do not like sitting idle, especially with white ink. DTF, direct-to-film, prints the design on a film first, then transfers it with adhesive powder and a heat press. That opens up more fabric types, including dark and synthetic workwear, without pretreating every piece.

Our shop prints branded workwear, bags, and small-batch merch, so DTF won for us. DTF has its own extra steps and a slightly different feel on large solid prints. There is no universal winner here. If most of your work is light cotton t-shirts, DTG may serve you better. If someone tells you DTF vs DTG has one right answer, they do not sell what you sell.

Whichever route you choose, prepare artwork at 300 DPI at final print size. An image that is 3,000 by 2,000 pixels can print at about 10 by 6.7 inches at 300 DPI. And ask for a color proof on your actual fabric. For brand-critical colors, an industry reference point is Delta E under 2, per Pantone Color Matching System guidelines; values above 4 are visible to most people. A print shop that checks that is worth more than the machine name on its box.

6. How Much Extra Should I Budget for New Equipment?

I do not believe one percentage works for every tool, but I set aside about 25 percent of the machine price for the make-it-work costs. A generator needs a heavy-duty extension cord and oil. A drill press needs a drill vise and decent bits. A printer needs ink, media, and maintenance supplies. The machine is the beginning of the spending, not the end.

The cost I keep forgetting is time. When we added a DTF printer and heat press, I remembered the film, powder, ink, and test blanks. I did not budget for the two days my team spent learning the workflow, and we used up extra materials while we learned. By the time I counted the labor and wasted supplies, the extra cost was closer to 40 percent of the hardware price. That was not the equipment's fault. It was my planning.

So my practical rule is simple: before buying, write the steps from box to first good part. If the plan includes supplies, training, and a circuit or air line your workspace does not have yet, you will not be surprised as often.

7. The Question Nobody Asks: Who Will Own the Machine?

The question most buyers forget is not which brand to buy. It is who owns the machine after it arrives. I learned this with my generator. No one had formal responsibility for it, so it sat for three months. When a paying job needed it, it would not start. The fuel had gone stale and the carburetor needed cleaning. That was not a generator defect; it was a management defect on my end. We had to rent a replacement and finish the job.

Since then, every piece of equipment in our shop has a named owner. The owner does not have to be the only user, but they own the one-page checklist: run the generator monthly, store filament dry, clean the printhead on a schedule, keep the drill press table clear. A checklist is not bureaucracy. It is how a small shop avoids paying for the same lesson twice.

So before you ask whether a tool is good, ask who will be responsible for it when the new-machine excitement wears off. That answer determines whether the tool makes money or becomes storage.
